Los 250 mejores discos del siglo XXI, según 'Rolling Stone'

BarcelonaLa revista estadounidense Rolling Stone ha elegido los 250 mejores discos del siglo XXI; es decir, del primer cuarto de siglo. La selección, que recoge álbumes publicados entre 2000 y 2024, está encabezada por Lemonade (2016), de Beyoncé; Kid A (2000), de Radiohead, y Blonde (2016), de Frank Ocean. El dominio de Beyoncé es abrumador: no sólo tiene el número 1, sino que está representada con un total de cinco álbumes: cuatro a su nombre y el Survivor (2001) del grupo Destiny's Child. "Lemonade es algo más que un disco. Es una película musical con tantas capas y tan bella e inquietante como un drama clásico, una matriz de desamor generacional, una celebración del legado y un mapa dibujado a mano de las intersecciones de la vida personal y política de muchas mujeres negras [. ..] En pocas palabras, Lemonade consolidó el estatus de Beyoncé entre los mejores músicos de todos los tiempos", dice la reseña que firma Mankaprr Conteh.

Otros artistas con presencia destacada son Taylor Swift y Kanye West, cada uno con cuatro discos en la lista. Con tres está Kendrick Lamar; y con dos hay hasta diecisiete grupos y artistas, entre ellos Rosalía, que aparece con El mal querer (2018) en el número 22 y con Motomami (2022) en el 78. Según Rolling Stone, con El mal querer Rosalía logró que el flamenco mirara hacia el futuro, y con Motomami hizo una traviesa fusión de pop global. También con dos discos están Adele, Fiona Apple, Bad Bunny, D'Angelo, Drake, Bob Dylan, Billie Eilish, Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Lorde, Frank Ocean, Radiohead, Lana Del Rey, SZA y The White Stripes.

Como es habitual en la revista norteamericana, la lista de los mejores discos del siglo XXI es eminentemente anglófona, aunque en puestos relevantes también hay discos en español, como Un verano sin ti, de Bad Bunny, en el número 9. El impacto que los artistas latinoamericanos han tenido en la industria musical estadounidense hace que también aparezcan en la lista Daddy Yankee, Karol G., Jenni Rivera, Julieta Venegas, Natalia Lafourcade y Shakira; aunque de Shakira han elegido un álbum cantado en inglés Laundry service (2001).

Fuera de América, Reino Unido, Irlanda y Australia, poca cosa. Rolling Stone incluye Vespertine (2011), de la islandesa Björk; y de la Europa continental, Discovery (2001), de los franceos Daft Punk; Próxima estación: Esperanza (2001), del francoespañol Manu Chao; Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (2009), de los franceses Phoenix, y El madrileño (2021), del español C. Tangana. De Asia, Map of the soul: 7 (2020), del grupo surcoreano BTS. Y la representación africana es sobre todo nigeriana, con el monumental African giant (2019), de Burna Boy; Mr. Money with the vibe (2022), de Asake; For broken ears (2020), de Tems, y Made in Lagos (2020), de Wizkid. También está el disco homónimo de la sudafricana Tyla.

En cuanto a los géneros musicales, Rolling Stone deja fuera el jazz y la clásica, y apuesta por el triángulo delimitado por el pop, el hip-hop y el indie rock, con poca representación de estilos como el hardcore y el metal y de músicas tradicionales que no tengan raíz estadounidense. Generacionalmente, en la lista mandan los artistas que han desarrollado la carrera sobre todo a partir del año 2000, aunque también contempla a artistas que ya eran estrellas en los años sesenta o setenta del siglo pasado como Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Brian Wilson, David Bowie y Bruce Springsteen, y otros que ya triunfaban en los ochenta como los grupos U2 y Red Hot Chili Peppers.
